The most straightforward application. Rainwater is naturally soft and free of the chlorine and hardness minerals in municipal supply, which many plants prefer.

How a system works
From roof to tap
Every rainwater system follows the same sequence. What changes is how each stage is specified.

Catchment & conveyance
Roof area, gutters and downpipes collect and carry the water. Catchment area is the main factor in how much water you can realistically harvest.

Pre-filtration
First-flush diversion and leaf or debris screening keep the bulk of the contamination out of the tank in the first place.

Storage
Tank sizing balances your intended use, available space, roof area and how long you need to bridge between rainfall.

Pump & distribution
Pressurised delivery to irrigation, outdoor taps or the house, integrated properly with your existing plumbing.

Treatment for the intended use
Filtration and disinfection appropriate to what the water will actually be used for. Irrigation and potable supply are not the same specification.

Common questions
Rainwater harvesting questions
How big a tank do I need?
That depends on your roof catchment area, local rainfall, and how you plan to use the water. We would rather work it out from your actual property than quote a number from a questionnaire.
Can rainwater be used for drinking water?
It can, where the system is properly designed, filtered, disinfected and meets the applicable requirements for potable supply. It is a different specification to an irrigation system and needs to be designed as such from the start.
Can I add rainwater harvesting to an existing house?
Usually, yes. Retrofits are common - the main considerations are where the tank goes, how the downpipes are routed to it, and how the distribution ties into your existing plumbing.
Do I still need a connection to my well or city water?
Most properties keep their existing supply as a backup. How the two are integrated - and kept properly separated where required - is part of the system design.
What maintenance does a rainwater system need?
Gutter and screen cleaning, first-flush device servicing, periodic tank inspection and filter or disinfection maintenance depending on the treatment specified. We walk you through the schedule at handover.
